Estrogen & Progesterone

Estrogen in Men

Men may be surprised to discover that their bodies produce small amounts of estrogen and progesterone. While estrogen is primarily recognized as a female sex hormone, it also plays an important role in male health. Adequate estrogen levels are crucial for maintaining hormonal balance and overall health in men, as well as for optimal heart, brain, and bone function. Like all hormones, estrogen must be kept in balance; both excessively high and low levels can lead to chronic health issues.

The Connection Between Low Testosterone and High Estrogen Levels in Men

As men age, testosterone levels naturally decline, while the conversion of testosterone to estrogen increases due to an enzyme called aromatase. This often results in older men having elevated estrogen levels alongside decreased testosterone. Additionally, body fat contributes to higher estrogen and lower testosterone levels. Elevated estrogen is associated with a higher risk of stroke, coronary artery disease, prostate enlargement, and prostate cancer. It can also lead to a range of unpleasant symptoms in men.

Causes of Elevated Estrogen Levels in Men

Aging

Aging is associated with decreased levels of testosterone and increased levels of estrogen due to an increase in the conversion of testosterone to estrogen.

Medications

Estrogen-containing drugs increase estrogen levels.

Obesity

Fat cells, especially those in the abdominal region, produce the enzyme aromatase, which converts testosterone into estrogen. More fat cells or larger fat cells result in more aromatase enzymes, which results in lower testosterone levels and higher estrogen levels.

Illness

Some tumors (testes, adrenal, pituitary glands, liver, lung, kidney and thyroid), along with certain diseases, can elevate estrogen levels.

Alcohol

Excessive alcohol intake increases the conversion of testosterone to estrogen.

Environmental Exposure

Men and women are exposed to xenoestrogens (artificial estrogens) in the environment, including plastics, pesticides, poultry and plastic bags.

The Solution

The first step in balancing estrogen levels is identifying the underlying cause of the imbalance. This involves a thorough medical history, physical examination, and lab testing to assess your current hormone levels. While the decline in testosterone and rise in estrogen due to aging are natural processes, there are proactive steps you can take to slow them down. Key lifestyle changes include reducing body fat, minimizing alcohol consumption, and avoiding environmental xenoestrogens.
